Women councillors Shagufta Parveen and Jannat Jahan-ul-Haq of municipal corporation (MC), Chandigarh, on Thursday met UT adviser Vijay Dev to lodge their protest against non-declaration of holiday on the occasion of Eid-ul-Fitr on July 18 by the UT administration.
They submitted a memorandum demanding not to deprive the minorities in the city from their cultural freedom as per the Constitution of India. They stated that the administration should treat all religions, communities and faiths equally.
They also presented a list of the Central government's gazetted holidays and directions issued by the Government of India in this regard and asked the administration to follow the Central government's rules while declaring holidays in the city as it is directly controlled by the Central government.
They further stated that all government schools and many private schools, hospitals, other institutions and banks were open on Eid. They alleged that this has happened for the first time that a holiday was not declared in the city.
