A 21-year-old student allegedly committed suicide at Swami Devi Dyal Hospital and Dental College at Barwala near here. The police received the information around 8.30 pm on Thursday that Sachika Sharma, a native of Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh and a student of third year, hanged herself in her hostel room. So far no suicide note has been recovered from the spot.

It was victim's friend and roommate Balraaj Kaur who first spotted her body hanging from a fan in the room.

Her brother Rishit Sharma told mediapersons that Sachika was in touch with them till Thursday morning and had allegedly complained about harassment by the college authorities.

According to Rishit, her sister had applied for leave to go home. Though principal NC Rao signed on the application, it was not handed over to her, said Rishit.

Sachika wanted to go home. On Wednesday, when she was trying to go out on the gate pass of her friend she was caught and the matter was reported to hostel warden.

Rishit further alleged that hostel warden Shipra had threatened his sister that she would be expelled from the college now.

The family also submitted a complaint with the police for registration of abetment to suicide case. They also alleged that the college authorities had removed Sachika's suicide note.

The college authorities have denied the allegations. Ashok Jindal, chairman of college management committee, told mediapersons that there was no lapse on their part and if the police obtained call details of the woman the truth would come out.

Sachika was a brilliant student as claimed by principal Dr NC Rao.

Dr Sunil Gambhir from General Hospital, Sector 6, Panchkula, told that there was no other injury on the victim's body and she died of hanging.
