A 22-year-old drug addict committed suicide by consuming poisonous substance and also poisoned his grandmother to death at their Dera Bassi residence, late at night on Sunday.

The deceased have been identified as Varun Dalmia, 22, and his 92-year-old grandmother Sushila Devi. According to the police, a suicide note was recovered from the Varun’s room, in which he had stated that he was a drug addict and could not let go of substance abuse despite repeated attempts. Varun did not blame anyone for his death and mentioned in the note that he was aware that his family was losing patience with his addiction, and he was therefore committing suicide. He also confessed murdering his grandmother, stating that he was taking her along so that he can serve her there.

Varun’s father Parmodh Dalmia, who works with a factory in Dera Bassi, informed the police that his son started to vomit suddenly on late Sunday evening and was rushed to Dera Bassi Civil Hospital. The doctors there referred him to the Government Medical College and Hospital in Sector 32, Chandigarh, where he was declared brought dead.

Parmodh added the family returned home only to find Sushila Devi lying unconscious. She was declared brought dead when rushed to hospital.

The family then informed the police, who recovered Varun’s suicide note while searching the house in which the Dalmia family has been residing since a year.

However, the police in their preliminary investigation have not found any foul play. They have initiated proceedings under Section 174 of the Code of Criminal Procedure.

The dead bodies have been handed over to the family members by the police after conducting postmortem.
