Amandeep Kaur, a 22-year-old student, living as a paying guest in Phase 5 was shot dead by her alleged boyfriend Gurmeet Singh, 22, barely 200 metres away from her house in Phase 5 market on Monday.

The victim’s three friends, also her roommates who had accompanied her to the market, witnessed the entire incident.

The incident took place at around 7.30 pm when the four girls were returning home after purchasing milk from the market. While they were on their way back, they were stopped by Gurmeet who was on foot and the two started talking.

Both the accused and the victim are residents of Ferozepur. The police are already on the lookout for Gurmeet, who ran away, leaving his car parked nearby. They have detained two boys for questioning. According to the police, the victim’s friend related that Gurmeet knew Amandeep for a long time.

The friends added that they overheard Gurmeet, asking Amandeep whether she would marry him or not.

When Amandeep seemed to have said no, he took out a pistol from his pocket and shot her thrice.

One of the bullet hit the head, while two were shot in the stomach, which were apparently directed towards her heart.

“We heard him saying something regarding her being heartless,” said one of the friends. Amandeep fell on the spot, while Gurmeet fled.

The police later recovered a white Verna PB05X2114 allegedly belonging to Gurmeet on which he had come from Ferozepur to meet Amandeep.

As Amandeep lay in pool of blood, her friends cried for help. Onlookers rushed to help and took Amandeep to a private hospital nearby in Phase 5 where she was declared brought dead. From there, her body was taken to civil hospital phase 6. The postmortem examination will be carried out on Tuesday.

Her parents, who live in Doluwal village in Ferozepur, have been informed and were on their way here at the time of filing of this report. The police have recorded a part of the statement of the three girls who were with Amandeep.

“They are in a state of shock. We will be able to gather more facts from them tomorrow,” said the SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar. The police have also quizzed the local guardian of the victim who rushed to the civil hospital.

What provoked the accused

Amandeep along with her three friends had arrived in city some 10 days back and was pursuing a six-month diploma course in computers.

The victim’s friends told the police that Gurmeet lived in Rajewal village in Ferozepur and knew Amandeep from Ferozepur.

However, when Gurmeet proposed that they get married, she refused as they belonged to different castes. According to her friends, Amandeep had told Gurmeet that her family would never agree to an inter-caste marriage and they should end whatever relation they had.

According to the friends, Gurmeet was also over-possessive about Amandeep. “This was another reason that Amandeep wanted to cut short her relations with him,” said the SSP.

What police say

SSP Gurpreet Singh Bhullar rushed to the spot along with SP (city) Ashish Kapoor and questioned the victim’s friends.

Bhullar told HT that it looked like the outcome of a love relation gone wrong.

“A case under Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code has been registered,” he said.
