23-year-old PEC engineering student ends life

A third-year student at the PEC University of Technology, Vikram Pandey, 23, committed suicide by hanging himself at his Sector 8 residence in Panchkula on Monday afternoon. The family has claimed that he was under depression, but his teachers at the engineering college deny having noticed anything unusual. This was second such suicide attempt by the victim.

A Taekwondo player and an above average student till class XII he had made it to the metallurgy engineering at PEC on merit. Speaking to HT, the deceased's father SB Pandey said, "My son was undergoing treatment from the psychiatry department at GMCH-32 but he was recovering or I would say he had already recovered and I never expected such a step from him."

Pandey, who retired as a junior warrant officer from the Airforce, said that he was not at home when he got a call a call from his wife at about 12pm, stating that his son was dead.

The victim was to appear for his first exam for the sixth semester on Tuesday. Those from the metallurgy department at PEC said that Vikram had been constantly slipping in his studies.

The head of the metallurgy department Uma Batra said, "I am shocked to hear about Vikram. He was not doing well academically but I would say that he was a quiet and intelligent student. I never noticed any signs of depression neither I am aware if he was undergoing any treatment. He had fallen into bad company though. I am sorry for the loss."
