A 23-year-old married woman, who had sustained burns at Ram Darbar on April 29, succumbed to her injuries at Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, on Wednesday.
The victim, Anjali Devi, a resident of Ram Darbar, had suffered 85% burns after the gas stove exploded while she was cooking food.
However, her family alleged that the victim was burnt for dowry.
Sources in the police said in her statement to the magistrate, the victim had claimed that this was an accident case and had not accused anyone for this incident.
However, the family members said this was not an accident case, "Anjali was set on fire by her husband Jatinder Kumar and mother-in-law. Anjali was being harassed by her in-laws for dowry," said Geeta, sister of the victim.
Anjali and Jatinder were in a relationship and they got married two years back. But soon after their marriage, her in-laws started harassing Anjali and her parents for dowry. She was also allegedly beaten up by her husband several times.
Geeta said when she was alone with the victim in the hospital room, she said her in-laws forcibly set her on fire. The statements of Geeta have also been recorded by the investigating officer and investigations are on.
