A woman committed suicide by consuming some poisonous substance here on Friday. The deceased has been identified as Satwinder Kaur, 24, of Dakala village near Rupnagar.

On the statement of her father Lal Singh, a case has been registered under section 304B (dowry death) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the Indian Penal Code against Satwinder's husband Harjit Singh, mother-in-law Mohinder Kaur alias Manjit Kaur, brother-in-law Sukhwinder Singh and sister-in-law Jaswinder Kaur.

Lal Singh, a resident of Saialba Majri village, SAS Nagar, said his daughter was married to Harjit Singh on August 28, 2013. He alleged her in-laws used to harass and thrash her for dowry, as a result of which she had taken the extreme step.

The victim was taken to a local private hospital from where she was referred to the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh, where she died.
