The State Transport Authority (STA) here on Tuesday challaned 25 school auto-rickshaws for overloading.
In a special drive carried out in the afternoon, it was found that most auto-rickshaws were carrying more than 10 school children. In one such case, an auto-rickshaw was found carrying 17 school children. The penalty for carrying children more than the prescribed capacity is Rs 1,000.
According to officials, auto-rickshaw operators put security of schoolchildren at stake for minor financial gains. It has also been observed that sometimes children are dropped across the road subjecting them to further danger.
The STA has urged the parents to ensure that their children do not go to schools in such overloaded auto rickshaws.
