28-yr-old stabbed to death, two Punjab cops arrested

A 28-year-old youth was allegedly stabbed to death and his brother sustained injuries after they were attacked by a Punjab Police constable and his accomplices at Phase 9 in SAS Nagar past midnight on Monday.

The deceased has been identified as Manjinder Singh, a resident of Phase 8, who was an up-and-coming singer.

Constable Amritpal Singh, posted with Punjab home department in Chandigarh, attacked Manjinder and his brother Harinder Singh, also a constable with the Punjab Police and posted at Phase 8 police station, with sharp-edged weapons.

In his complaint, Harinder accused Amritpal and his father Rashpal Singh of assaulting them. He also accused another Punjab Police constable Mohan Lal, who was present outside Amritpal’s house, of provoking them.

Following Harinder’s complaint, the police registered a case against Amritpal, Rashpal, Mohan Lal and three unidentified persons under sections 302 (murder), 307 (attempt to murder), 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon) and 149 (unlawful assembly) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). Amritpal and Mohan Lal were arrested on Tuesday evening.

According to the police, Amritpal and Harinder were consuming alcohol when they entered into heated arguments over a common female friend, leading to a scuffle near the Forest Complex light point. Later, Harinder and Manjinder reached Amritpal’s house in Phase 9 and started abusing him. Amritpal and his father came out of the house and a fight ensued. Amritpal, Harinder and Manjinder sustained major injuries.

Amritpal’s cousin Mandeep Singh said Harinder and Manjinder were accompanied by some other youths when they reached Amritpal’s house. They allegedly attacked Amritpal with sharp-edged weapons.
He added that after informing the police, the family members rushed Amritpal to civil hospital in Phase 6, but he was later shifted to Government Multi-Speciality Hospital, Sector 16, Chandigarh.

Deputy superintendent of police Navreet Singh Virk said both parties made calls to the helpline. When the police reached the spot, they saw Harinder and Manjinder lying in a pool of blood and rushed them to hospital, where doctors declared Manjinder brought dead. Harinder was referred to a private hospital.

The police said Amritpal stabbed Manjinder thrice in his chest and abdomen.

Virk said they have recorded the statement of Amritpal, wherein he had stated that Manjinder and Harinder had assaulted him due which he sustained injuries. As per Amritpal’s statement, the police registered a case against Harinder and Manjinder under sections 325 (voluntarily causing grievous hurt) and 323 (voluntarily causing hurt) of the IPC.
