Three militants were killed in two separate encounters in Sopore area of north Kashmir on Thursday. One army jawan was also injured in gunbattles.
According to the preliminary reports, a joint operation of the army and other security agencies was launched at two places in Sopore area of Baramulla district, 55 km from Srinagar, on Wednesday night.
The security forces were working on tip offs about presence of militants in the area, who might had sneaked recently after upper reaches received heavy snowfall.
The security forces first came in contact with militants at Cherhaar forest area. "Today afternoon the first contact with the militants occurred, militants hiding in the forest fired upon the joint search team triggering an encounter. One unidentified militant was killed in the encounter, which is still going on," said the police spokesman.
Besides the Sopore police, the army’s 27 RR and special forces of 9 Para participated in the operation in the forest area of Cherhaar.
One army jawan also received injuries in the gunbattle.
In a separate encounter in Sopore, two militants were killed after an exchange of fire between them and security forces at Mundgaji area.
"The encounter took place in an orchid at Mundaji, Batengo. Two unidentified militants were killed," said the spokesman.
The operation is on despite poor weather. It has been raining since morning in the valley.
Militants sneak into residential areas once upper reaches are snowed. Every year during winters, there is increase in encounter between militants and security forces in the hinterland.
