Cracking a human trafficking racket, the police on Tuesday arrested three West Bengal residents who were allegedly trying to sell off a minor girl, who had been brought to Chandigarh allegedly after being kidnapped.
The accused were arrested after the police laid a trap on Monday night.
The accused have been identified as Raju (31), Gopal Sarkar (39) and Daddu Mondi (28). They were produced in a court which sent them in three days’ police remand.
The police also recovered two more girls in the evening and one of them was staying with a Manimajra resident.
SOLD GIRLS AS BRIDES, DOMESTIC HELP
Police said girls were being brought and then sold, some as brides and others as domestic help. One of the two girls recovered by the police was sold off as a bride without the consent of her parents. ASP ( East) Guriqbal Singh Sidhu said they had identified some people in Chandigarh who worked with the gang and the picture of their net would be clear after interrogating them.
HOW WAS THE GANG BUSTED
The police said a trap was laid under the supervision of ASP Sidhu after getting a secret information that a group was selling girls in the area.
“After authenticating the information, a cop was sent as a decoy customer to strike a deal with the accused at Kishangarh roundabout, Manimajra. The accused sought Rs 5,000 for showing them the 14-year-old girl. The police paid the money and subsequently nabbed the accused and recovered the girl,” said the ASP. The police said the accused had demanded Rs 50,000 for the girl.
GIRLS BROUGHT AFTER PROMISING THEM JOBS
In the preliminary investigations, it has been found that the accused were bringing girls from West Bengal and then selling them in Chandigarh and neighbouring states.
The accused lured parents of the girls saying that their daughters would get jobs and be paid well. Some girls were also brought after marrying them, sources in the police said.
The police said, “On the basis of the accused, two more girls, one of them minor, were rescued. The accused had sold one of the girls to a person namely Harishankar for Rs 70,000 in Manimajra. Both the minor girls have been rescued and sent to Snehalaya, while the other girl has been sent to Nari Niketan,” added the police.
ROLE OF MORE PEOPLE LIKELY: POLICE
ASP Sidhu said, “The accused have been sent to three-day police remand by a court. They have been booked under Sections 366-A (procuration of minor girl.), 372 (selling minor for purposes of prostitution, etc) and 34 (acts done by several persons in furtherance of common intention) of the IPC. “We are suspecting involvement of more people in the matter. We have identified a Bapu Dham colony resident, who was facilitating the accused in finding customers. We are also in touch with the West Bengal police to know about the acquaintances of the accused and to verify the antecedents of the girls,” he said.
