A 30-year-old man was found murdered in Vikas Nagar, Nayagaon, on Diwali night, Sunday. Police suspect the victim - Ashok Kumar, native of Fatehpur in Badaun district of Uttar Pradesh - was beaten to death with stones as several blood-stained stones were found near the body. He had been working as a wall painter in Chandigarh for the past one year.

Nayagaon police station house officer (SHO) Shinderpal Singh Bhullar said, "It seems that the victim consumed liquor with his friends on Diwali night and later had a fight. On Monday morning, some passersby informed us about the body, and we also found blood-stained stones. There were injuries on his head."

Ashok was staying in Sector 26 at a dhaba. "We have registered a murder case against unidentified persons, and constituted teams to crack the case," said Bhullar. After the post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to the family. Ashok is survived by his wife and three minor children, who live in their native village in UP.

Superintendent of police (SP), city, Swarndeep Singh, and deputy SP, city-1, Rajinder Singh Sohal, also reached the spot along with fingerprint experts and crime investigation agency (CIA) officials.

In June this year, a Solan-based businessman Vikrant Verma was murdered at Nayagaon with the motive of robbery. The police solved the case after arresting Vikram, a resident of Himachal Pradesh, and Raj Rani of Nayagaon.
