32 Poplar trees found axed in Shimla

chandigarh Updated: Nov 20, 2014 21:52 IST

Nearly a week ago, over 200 deodar and oak trees were found axed near famous Taradevi temple. Even as forest department suspended beat officer Kundan Lal and guard Nisha, nearly 32 trees of Poplar were found axed neat the US club after information of forest fire hailed from the green area of Shimla town on Thursday.

When the fire officials and Shimla municipal corporation officials led by deputy mayor Tikender Singh Panwar reached on spot, they found it was not natural fire but set by unknown people to destroy the axed poplar trees. “Though trees are small but around 32 stumps can be seen there and it seems it was an act by land mafia to free the land from forest cover,” said Panwar. He said he would write to police department about this matter. “Though the case will be filed under the Shimla MC Act, but there was an unsuccessful attempt of setting up fire in the forest,” he added.

Meanwhile, forest officials reached on the spot and marked all stumps and filed damage report (DR) of 32 poplar trees and seized woods.

Deputy ranger Susheel Kumar said, “We investigated the matter and locals have told about felling of trees on the plot that belongs to individual residing in Delhi.”

He also said a case would be filed against land owner under section 339 and 340 of the Shimla Municipal Corporation Act, since the area falls within the boundary of municipal area.
