A total of 38 prisoners, includes 35 life convicts undergoing imprisonment on murder charges, have jumped parole from the district jail, Rohtak, since 1982, but are yet to be re-arrested.

This information was revealed by the jail superintendent in response to an application filed by advocate HC Arora under the Right To Information (RTI) Act. Rohtak is the home constituency of Haryana chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda.

According to the information, ever since the inception of the district jail, Rohtak, 38 prisoners, including 35 life convicts in murder cases, one rape convict, one prisoner convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and another for attempt to murder (Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code) have jumped parole. The police have failed to re-arrest any of these convicts.

A public interest litigation (PIL) filed by Arora, seeking the setting up of a special task force for re-arresting parole jumpers in Punjab and Haryana, is already pending. In the PIL, the petitioner advocate had submitted detailed particulars of 131 such parole jumpers from seven Haryana jails. Now, with the latest information, the number of parole jumpers has risen to 169 in eight jails of the state.
