Four cricketers were arrested here on Sunday for kidnapping a fomer Ranji Trophy player, who had allegedly duped them on the pretext of getting them selected in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Assistant commissioner of police Balkar Singh said Tejinder Kaur, wife of kidnapped player Ajay Suman, on Saturday complained that he was kidnapped by Gurlal Singh, a resident of Mohali; Rajput Choudhary from Dehradum, Rockey, a resident of Shahpur Markanda in Haryana and Mohinder Singh Kaila of Hardev Nagar here.
Mohinder was arrested first and during preliminary interrogation, he revealed that his three accomplices had taken Suman to a farmhouse in Bhago Majra near Chandigarh, said Balkar. The place was raided and the three kidnappers caught while Suman was rescued.
"During investigation, it was revealed that Suman had taken Rs 4 lakh from the four men, who are all cricketers, promising to get them a place in the next season of IPL," said Balkar.
Rajput, Rockey and Mohinder are Ranji Trophy players, while Gurlal had played in a cricket league associated with the rival camp of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).
As Suman failed to ensure their selection in IPL, the four men went to his house on September 18 and after a heated argument took him with them, said the ACP. "As soon as Suman's wife complained to us, we swung into action and within 24 hours solved the case," he added.
Balkar said the investigation is on to know on what basis Suman had promised to get them selected in IPL and to track down conduits, if any.
