Forty-three passengers travelling in an overloaded canter had a miraculous escape when the vehicle skidded off the road and rolled down the paddy fields 50-foot below near Kakora on Jammu–Poonch highway on Wednesday.
Most passengers escaped unhurt and those injured were rushed to the district hospital.
The driver, not authorised to drive a canter, lost control on a sharp curve and the vehicle rolled down the fields, said the police, adding that the vehicle with a capacity for 30 passengers was ferrying 45 when the accident took place near the higher secondary school at Kakora.
The injured were rescued by the locals and the cops from the nearby police station at Manjakot and were rushed to the district hospital.
“Three persons with head injuries were referred to the GMC hospital in Jammu for specialised treatment. The condition of other injured is improving,” said Dr Chaman Bhasin, superintendent district hospital.
Most of the injured included college students and government employees. A case has been registered.
