Close on the heels of a theft involving a sum of `30 lakh by three teenagers from the Nadaun branch of the State Bank of India in this district, five undertrials escaped from the Hamirpur sub jail by scaling its walls on Sunday.
Those who fled from the jail were identified as Avnish Kumar of Mandi district, Karamjit of Una district, Bansi Lal of Chamba, Sher Mohammed of Hamirpur and Vicky of Kangra.
These undertrials were facing various types of criminal charges including murder, sale of drugs and rape. They were in the jail for the last one-and-a-half years.
Hamirpur sub-divisional magistrate Chand Prakash Sharma, who is also superintendent of the jail, told Hindustan times that the five undertrials were found missing from their cells when the routine counting was done in the evening hours on Sunday.
Sharma said that the local police was informed about the incident and the entire district was cordoned off to apprehend theses hardcore criminals who were still on the run.
There are about 75 undertrials lodged in the Hamirpur sub jail that was constructed as a high security jail. This jail is located just close to the local police lines in the Lahlari area of the town on Hamirpur-Shimla highway.
District Superintendent of Police Ajay Bodh said that the police were making all-out efforts to nab the escaped undertrials and the police in the other districts had also been informed about the incident.
The SP said that the police had registered a case of jail-break and further investigations were on.
Meanwhile, the local residents are highly agitated over the growing activities of law-breakers in the district and alleging the two incidents within a couple of days have exposed the failure of the law-enforcing agencies in maintaining the law and order in the district. They want proper and timely action by the police to nab the escaped undertrials and the theft accused to create a sense of security among the people.
