SAS Nagar

A five-year-old Australia-born child was allegedly kidnapped from Phase 9 in SAS Nagar on Tuesday and the police have booked four members of his paternal family, including his father, in this connection.

Harjinder Kaur, mother of the victim, alleged that her son Mehram was abducted on Tuesday evening when he was playing in a park near her house. She suspected that her in-laws have abducted the child as she is in a matrimonial dispute with her husband.

The accused have been identified as Varinder Pal Singh, victim’s father who is currently in Australia, his grandfather Nirmal Singh, aunt Parminder Kaur and her husband Prabhjit Singh.

She alleged that a few hours before her child went missing, she received a call from her husband who hurled abuses at her and said he would take his son back.

Harjinder also said her family was getting threatening calls from her in-laws.

Meanwhile, the police raided the house of paternal family of the victim, but could not trace the child.

Harinder Kaur said she married Varinderpal Singh in 2007 and they went to Australia thereafter. Mehram was born on December 5, 2008, in Sydney. Six months after his birth, she came back to India along with her son. She claimed that later her husband sent her the divorce papers from Australia, to which she had not responded as yet.

Area residents protest

The family members of the victim and the area residents held a protest on Wednesday and also blocked the road in Phase 9.

After conducting a preliminary enquiry, the police lodged an FIR against the four accused under section 365, 120B and 506 of the Indian Penal Code.
