A 50-year-old senior accountant jumped to his death from the fifth floor of the building housing the Punjab accountant general’s office in Sector 17 here on Friday.

Police sources said the man, identified as Gulab Singh, a Sector 41 resident who worked as senior accountant at the office, had gone there early in the morning to get his holiday entitlement and leapt from the balcony facing the library.

They added he was reportedly suffering from depression.

Gulab’s body was found lying in a pool of blood on the ground by the employees who promptly called up the police.

He was taken to the Government Multispecialty Hospital in Sector 16, where he was declared dead on arrival.

No suicide note was found at the suicide scene.

Gulab’s colleagues described him as a very cheerful person.

However, his son, Gopal, told the police he had been receiving treatment for severe depression for the past couple of months, adding he had also told his family members on several occasions that he was unhappy at work.

Gopal said his father had complained about some very important files being stolen from his cabinet in the office and had reported the matter to senior officials but they did not take any action .

Inquest proceedings in the matter have been initiated by the police.
