56-year-old Mauli Jagran man gets jail for attacking tenant

chandigarh Updated: Aug 20, 2014 10:35 IST

District and sessions judge SK Aggarwal on Tuesday awarded nine months jail to a 56-year-old resident of Mauli Jagran for assaulting his tenant, who died a few days after the attack.

As the convict, Mewa Singh, has already spent more than nine months behind bars during the trial, the court rendered his sentence as “period undergone”. The court also imposed a fine of `11,000 on the convict out of which `5,000 would be paid to the widow of the victim, Mahinder Singh.

“Mewa had inflicted kicks thrice on the stomach of the victim, but was not aware that this could lead to his death. Mewa never intended to kill him. Moreover, Mahinder died during treatment in hospital and not immediately after the attack. Thus, this does not prove the charge culpable homicide not amounting to murder and hence he is acquitted of the same,” read the court order.

UT police had arrested Mewa after registering a case on the complaint of Aruna, 35, widow of Mohinder.

In her complaint on January 17, 2013, Aruna alleged that her husband was having drinks with their landlord, Mewa Singh.

She alleged that later, Mewa, in an inebriated state entered her room and tried to molest her, and when her husband resisted Mewa, the latter attacked him and kicked him several times in the stomach.

Mahinder was taken to government hospital in Sector 6, Panchkula, from where two days later he was referred to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Sector 32, where he died while undergoing treatment on January 21.
