A 70-year-old former Panjab University professor was robbed of jewellery and cash at her house in Sector 44 on Tuesday evening.
The incident took place when Nirmal Dutta went out to park her car in the porch. Meanwhile, the miscreant gained entry inside the house.
After parking the car, Dutta went inside and bolted the door. Suddenly, the miscreant flashed a knife at her and tied the senior citizen's hand and feet before gathering the jewellery.
The miscreant also took away Dutta's phone, but kept it outside before leaving. He also untied her feet before leaving the spot.
Dutta told the police that the person had covered his face with a shawl and she could not see him clearly.
Dutta used to stay alone in the house as her husband, former professor D L Dutta, had expired three years ago and her two daughters stayed abroad.
Dewan Singh, SHO of the Sector-34 police station said, "As the miscreant flashed the knife and asked Dutta to give her jewellery and cash, she pleaded the robber that she will give whatever she had at home, but he should not kill her. She gave him Rs 9,000 cash, an ATM card, diamond and gold ring. He also took away the camera lying in the room."
Dutta approached the neighbours after the robber left her house. The police have registered a case of robbery under Section 392 of the IPC. The police said the senior citizen was in a state of shock.
The police said the robber talked to the senior citizen in Hindi and Punjabi. They added he did not appear to be much educated as could not even identify a gadget such as camera. He kept telling Dutta that he was committing the crime as he needed money.
According to the preliminary investigations, the SHO said it appeared to be the work of a drug addict and efforts were on to nab the miscreant.
The incident has washed all claims of the Chandigarh police of making the city secure for city residents. In fact, the incident has raised a question on the practice of beat system.
