With the arrival of 500 more pilgrims from Rishikesh (Uttarakhand) to Punjab on Thursday night, the total number of pilgrims evacuated so far from various parts of the flood-ravaged state has touched 8,000, a Punjab government spokesman said here.

The devotees were evacuated and ferried back to the home state in buses of the state transport and the Punjab Police, the spokesman added.

Senior IAS officer Dr Adapa Karthik has now replaced Kahan Singh Pannu for overseeing rescue operations.

More than 2,500 devotees from various states are still stranded at Badrinath as heavy rain is hampering rescue operations, the spokesman said.
