SAS Nagar deputy commissioner Tejinder Pal Singh Sidhu has said that 81,667-metric-tonne (MT) wheat has been purchased in the grain markets of the district so far this season.
Talking to mediapersons after inspecting wheat procurement arrangements in a grain market of Banur near here on Saturday, he also said that 1.43 lakh MTs of the crop was expected to be procured in the district this year.
The DC also said that Punsup had procured 14,336-MT wheat, the district's highest so far, while Pungrain had purchased 11,473-MT wheat this year.
The figures for other agencies are: Markfed, 11,119 Mts; FCI, 8,566 MTs; and private agencies, 2,204-MTs.
Sidhu said that officials of procurement agencies had been directed to pay the farmers concerned at the earliest.
'Poor roads leading to grain markets'
Arhtiyaas have complained of poor condition of link roads leading to grain markets in the district.
In a meeting with the deputy commissioner, an arhtiyaas' association, led by its president, Puneet Jain, apprised the DC of the poor state of link roads. The DC assured them of carrying out repairs on a priority basis. Replying to a query, the DC also said the administration had completed all arrangements for the elections of zila parishad and panchayat samiti in the district.
