Complimenting the banks for opening around 2 lakh accounts in a week under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY), chief secretary P Mitra said the bankers should aim at reaching out the remaining households, both in the urban and rural areas of the state, before end of October.

Mitra, while presiding over Himachal Pradesh state level bankers committee (SLBC) meeting here on Wednesday, said the state was well placed in terms of banking sector as the economy and education of the people was good. "The per-branch population here is 3,757 against national average of above 13,000, having high proportion of 89 % households availing banking services," Mitra said.

The chief secretary accentuated greater participation by the financial sector to increase usage of basic banking services through technology and innovation of products and services. He said the credit growth during the first quarter of the current fiscal was 20.15% as compared to deposit growth of 12.23%, which has helped to improve credit deposit (CD) ratio. "The national parameters set by Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for financing priority sector, agriculture sector, weaker section and women, were achieved by the banks, except differential rate of interest (DRI)," he added.

Meanwhile, finance principal secretary Shrikant Baldi said the state government would provide all assistance to achieve the allocated targets of the banks. "The state government will coordinate to improve the recovery performance of the banks and would also form a joint sub-committee of government officers and bankers, if needed," Baldi said.

Uco Bank chairman and managing director Arun Kaul said outreach of banking services in the state was one of the best in the country and under the new PMJDY scheme, the banks were identifying the remaining households to achieve 100% target. He said the total deposits of the banks in the state had recorded growth of 12.23% over the years. During the previous year the growth went to Rs 65,877.48 crore from `58,698.36 crore. Kaul added that total advances of the banks had recorded a growth of 20.15% (`29899.17 crore from `24,884.41 crore) during the previous year.

Meanwhile, Mitra stressed on opening more branches in unbanked areas of the state. He said, "The banks should open branches in unbanked areas. Out of 16 branches opened during the first quarter, only 6 have been opened in unbanked areas."
