Her sheltered world collapsed like a pack of cards when she lost both her parents who were killed in a road accident near Zirakpur last November after their car was hit by a bus when they were returning home from Delhi.
She recalls it was the saddest day in her life when she heard they were no more, made worse by the news her grandfather also died in the mishap.
Though their memories still haunt Vinish Jain, 16, this intrepid girl did not let the immense tragedy to deter her from facing the challenges of a harsh world. With her never-say-die attitude this student of Strawberry Fields High School went on to secure 95.6% marks in the ICSE class 10 results declared on Monday.
Vinish, who lives in Manimajra, aspires to be a doctor one day. She has an elder sister, Vanaja, who studies in class 12 at GMSSS-19 where her mother, Kalpana, used to teach chemistry. The sisters are now looked after by their maternal uncle and aunt who stay with them.
“That fateful morning I couldn’t comprehend how God could let this happen to me. We were a happy family and suddenly our world came crashing down. My mom used to teach me and my dad doted on me. I can still feel their presence near me. I found it extremely tough to emerge from the shock and concentrate on my studies but the yearning to fulfill my parents’ dreams for me and my sister and the endless support from my school gave me strength to live up to their expectations”, said Vinish.
