Rao said Vijay (42), uncle of the victim, had hired miscreants for throwing acid on Amit. She said Vijay was putting up in Shahpur, Ludhiana, with his second wife Ritu, cousin of the victim, with whom he had eloped a few years ago. He has a six-month-old daughter from Ritu.

According to the police, the accused was in touch with his first wife Sonu on telephone and her call details helped the investigators trace the accused. "After scanning the call details of Sonu, we found an STD number from which she was getting repeated calls," said Rao.

Divulging the reason behind the attack, Sunita said Vijay had eloped with Amit's teenaged cousin sister and was making advances at his younger sister, but Amit had been thwarting all such attempts.

Vijay and Amit had a scuffle last week when Vijay had come to Amit's Sector 38 residence. The role of Vijay's 14-year-old son is also under the scanner.

Cornea damaged

The condition of the victim, Amit Verma, is still not stable and his statement is yet to be recorded. Tarveen Kaur has been discharged from hospital. According to PGI doctors, Amit's eyes have been severely damaged. The acid has particularly damaged the cornea. Doctors said they were still not sure whether they would be able to restore his vision or not.
