Highlight Story

A 22-year-old boy sustained burn injuries on the face after some miscreants threw acid on him in the busy Sector 22 market opposite bus stand on Saturday evening. A girl standing close by also suffered minor injuries on her thighs, as she came in the line of fire.

Police sources said Amit Verma, a resident of Sector 38 and employed with a retail store in Sector 22, suffered injuries on his face and eyes. The girl, identified as Tarveen Kaur (19) and a PG resident of Sector 19, suffered 2% superficial burns on her thighs.

Giving details, police said the attack on Amit was engineered by his uncle (husband of father's sister) and uncle's son. Police said Amit was standing near his shop close to City Heart hotel in Sector 22 at around 6.45 pm. Suddenly, two miscreants came on a motorcycle and after calling out to Amit, they threw acid on him and escaped from the busy market.

Amit was rushed to Government Multi-Specialty Hospital in Sector 16 by his namesake, who's the brother of his employer. Tarveen was taken to the same hospital by her friend Deepak Mehta, a resident of Sector 51. Later, Amit was referred to PGIMER's Advanced Trauma Centre and looking into the nature of his injuries, he was then sent to Advanced Eye Centre. Amit's parents were informed about the incident and they rushed to the PGIMER.

Policespeak

DSP Ashish Kapoor said Vijay, who is the uncle (husband of victim's father's sister) was behind the attack. After the acid attack, Vijay called up Amit's sister Neelu (19) one her mobile phone to say that this time, he had only thrown acid at Amit and would eliminate him the next time. This call came in the presence of police, the DSP said.

Earlier also, a case was registered against Vijay (42) at the Sector 39 police station. Police said Vijay used to make advances at Neelu and Amit had thwarted his attempts. The DSP said efforts were on to nab Vijay and his accomplice.

Not the lone incident

This is not the first incident in which a man has been the target of an acid attack. On September 1 last year, Rakesh, managing director of Rudraksh group of immigration, Phase-1, SAS Nagar, was targeted by motorcycle-borne youths when he was sitting in a car with two others. However, a girl sitting in the front seat with Rakesh suffered 80% burn injuries and later died.
