Activists demand housing for all, give memorandum to DC

Demanding housing facility for all, the Ghar Adhikar Sangharsh Morcha, Chandigarh, a collective of concerned citizens fighting to ensure housing rights for all in Chandigarh, gave a memorandum to the Chandigarh deputy commissioner (DC) Mohammed Shayin on Monday.

Over 50 residents of the recently demolished colony number 5, colony number 4, Transit Colony, Sector 52, Madrasi Colony, Sector 26, and Rehabilitation Colony, Dhanas, submitted a memorandum and Charter of Demands to the DC.

The delegation included Manjit Singh, professor of Punjab University, Arjun Sheoran, lawyer and rights activist, Mandeep Singh, political activist, Inderjeet Singh, activist, Sachinder Pal, SFS (Students for Society).

The representatives of the morcha and residents from various colonies apprised the DC about the deplorable conditions of the residents who had been displaced by demolition drive from November 20-22 last year.

He was told that about 70% of colony number 5 residents had been rendered homeless and had not been provided any accommodation till date. The DC was informed that as per best practices followed by various states across India, the colonies should be regularised and they should be developed at the same location as it was being done across the country.

The activists said the DC had assured them of taking action in all these issues. He stated that a joint meeting of Satya Gopal, chairman, Chandigarh Housing Board, Chandigarh, officials of the transport department, Chandigarh, the DC himself along with the representatives of Ghar Adhikar Sangharsh Morcha and residents of various colonies would be organised for resolution of all pending issues.
