Additional district and sessions judge Shalini S Nagpal on Monday awarded four-year jail term to a habitual chain snatcher while his accomplice was awarded three-year jail, within just a month of being convicted in another case of chain snatching.
Considering that convict Cheenu alias Chinna, 22, has 15 cases registered against him, the court awarded four-year jail to him while his accomplice Vijay, 21, facing three cases of snatching, got three-year jail.
This time, the duo, residents of Sector 29, were convicted in a case registered on the complaint of Tarwinder Kaur, wife of a UT cop, whose chain was snatched by the accused. The duo used to operate on a motorcycle and targeted women.
The two were found to be repeated offenders, and thus, section 413 ((habitually dealing in stolen property) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) was added in the FIR of robbery (section 392). With their arrest, police claimed to have solved 15 snatching cases.
On February 10, the court had sentenced Cheenu to four years rigorous imprisonment, while Vijay was sentenced to three years in jail.
The prosecution stated that the two had committed a number of chain snatchings in the city. Police had recovered Rs 2.5 lakh in cash along with a Mahindra Bolero jeep and a motorcycle from them.
