The nursery admissions in private schools in city officially started on Friday with Strawberry Fields School, Sector 26, holding the admissions for the general category.

Interestingly, there were no draw of lots, and out of 120 seats falling under the general category, some seats were distributed among the siblings of those already studying in the school and some of the seats were given to those already registered in their play school.

The school, though, had received 217 applicants for the 120 seats, the school, however, only displayed a list of those who were given admission in the school. In all, out of total 120 seats, 59 were given to the siblings of students studying in school and 61 to those studying in their play school.
Also, a waiting list of 15 applicants was also taken out by draw of lots.

The school authorities informed those given admission will have to deposit `80,000 admission fee by January 25 and seats of those failing to do so will fall vacant and be given to the applicants from the waiting list.

Meanwhile, the school has total 160 seats for nursery class of which 25% (40 seats) have been reserved for the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS). There are total 103 applicants in EWS category and admissions for the same will be held on Saturday by draw of lots.

"The number of applicants, as always, far exceeds the number of seats. It is, however, our inability to accommodate all children,"said Atul Khanna, director of the school.

Besides Strawberry Fields School, Vivek High School, Sector 38, and Ajit Karam Singh International Public School (AKSIPS), Sector 45, will also hold admissions to nursery class on Saturday.

At Vivek High School, there are total 95 seats and not even a single seat has been reserved under the EWS quota. The school authorities informed they had in all received 600 applications for the said number of seats. The school follows a point-based system to fill the seats.

AKSIPS has total 60 seats for the nursery for which, over 100 applications have been received. The school will also hold admissions following a draw of lots system.

It is learnt that the admission criteria for the nursery class is different with different schools of the city. Many give admissions on the first-come-first-serve-basis, others give seats to siblings of students already studying in the school. Another criteria followed these days is based on point system.

Not many schools in city are following a transparent system of draw of lots to hold admissions and the education department is also silent on the same.
