Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal on Wednesday asked Punjab Rice Exporters Association (PREA) to adopt the clusters of eight to 10 villages each for quality seed production of the basmati varieties, besides reviving traditional variety basmati-386.

The CM assured the PREA members who called on him here that the state would give them all support and cooperation for this cause that will not only help the government’s crop diversification plan but also get farmers a remunerative price for their product, an official spokesman has said.

Badal said the state agriculture department and the PREA could work together for producing quality basmati seed to boost rice export. He also promised to resolve all pending issues of the PREA in Basmati Development Board and asked the officers concerned to schedule its meeting at the earliest.

The CM agreed to take up the issue of recognition of basmati variety 1121 in European countries with the union ministry of commerce. The variety is not yet approved for export to Europe.
