Romance and love at first sight are not the exclusive preserve of the young and the brash in the Facebook age and also perhaps the possibility that it could go all wrong.
A case from SAS Nagar where a 73-year-old man fell for a 58-year-old NRI woman, after initial contact through Facebook, illustrates this adage to perfection.
Married on August 30 at the Sector 71 gurdwara here, the couple is now at the crossroads with the woman landing up unconscious in hospital after a public scene outside their house in Sector 71 on Thursday night.
However, it is still a tale that deserves to be told.
The couple got in touch through Facebook around six months back when Jatinder Veena Singh, a resident of Vancouver in Canada, sent a friend request to Sector 71 resident Parminder Singh, who is a deputy director from the defence department.
Parminder said he accepted the request thinking that it to be sent by a friend as the profile was in the name of JV Singh. The duo started chatting and slowly the chat duration increased to a couple of hours and they became good friends.
Parminder revealed that Veena used to call him as ‘bacha’ (child), despite he disclosing his age to her. With the passage of time, both started liking each other. He said initially he had not seen her photograph, but the communication over the Facebook chat started stretching to around 18 hours a day. Then, they also started talking on phone for around 15 hours a day.
“One day she proposed to me to be her life partner and I accepted the proposal,” said Parminder.
He added that they decided to get married and she came to SAS Nagar on August 27. “Without causing any delay, I made all arrangements for the marriage and we tied the knot on August 30,” added Parminder.
One of the guests at the marriage area councillor AS Somal (63) said, “It was a life time experience attending the wedding of an aged couple. Even I was in the favour of their decision as both were staying alone.”
Both have lost their partners. While Parminder’s wife died around 10 years back, Jatinder’s husband passed away a year ago.
Relations turn sour
On Thursday night, high drama was witnessed at Parminder’s house as Veena was upset over an issue and started abusing him. Parminder then called the police, who asked the couple to settle the dispute amicably. But Veena started creating a scene outside their house. She then fell unconscious on the road. The police and Parminder then rushed her to hospital, where she is still under treatment.
However, Parminder said for the past few days, their relationship had become strained and he had even filed a police complaint against his wife for harassing him.
