Vikas Chauhan, official gunman of Om Prakash Jain - independent MLA from Panipat - succumbed to injuries at the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER), Chandigarh, on Tuesday morning.

Police have booked Jain's driver Mukesh Kumar for negligent driving that led to the death of two people, including RD Sheokand, chairman of the Haryana Environment Impact Assessment Authority on Monday.

Karnal superintendent of police (SP) Shashank Anand told Hindustan Times that Mukesh was being treated at the Trauma Centre in the district and his condition was stated to be stable.

Jain was travelling with chief minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda when his private car, in which his driver Mukesh and gunman Chauhan were following Hooda's cavalcade, rammed into Sheokand's car after crashing the divider on the national highway-1, near Nirmal Kutiya, in the town.

"Mukesh has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving), 337 (endangering life and personal life of others) and 304-A (causing death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). We are awaiting doctors' approval before recording his statement," the SP said.

RD Sheokand, retired IAS officer of the Haryana cadre and former chairman of the Haryana Public Service Commission, had died on the spot, while his friend RS Lamba was injured critically.

Mukesh was allegedly driving at a high speed and lost control over the vehicle that led to the accident.

The SP said Lamba's chest was crushed in the accident and was being treated at Alchemist hospital in Panchkula.
