Agri varsity to accelerate fish production to enhance its income
Chaudhary Sarwan Kumar Himachal Pradesh Agriculture University (HPAU), Palampur, has handed over all water harvesting structures, check dams, man- made and natural ponds on its campus to the fisheries department of Dr GC Negi College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences for fish production, a constituent college of the varsity.

This would serve dual purpose of irrigation water supply in the farm fields of the campus and production of varieties of fishes to enhance the income of the university.
HPAU vice- chancellor Dr KK Katoch said the fisheries department of Animal Science College would now stock fishes in all water bodies on its campus.
Earlier, the college was using only those water bodies for fish breeding which were under College Of Animal Science.
The department was also distributing the fish fingerlings to farmers of the state to augment their income.
The V-C also released around 15,000 fingerlings in various water bodies of the university on the occasion of Fish Stocking Day celebrated on Friday.
Meanwhile, presiding over twin meetings of Extension Council and Research Council, which were organised on Saturday, Katoch said farmers were the main focus of the university in its all research and extension education programmes.
The V-C informed that in addition to regular programmes, the directorate of extension education and eight farm science centres have been asked to adopt and demonstrate new scientific technology in one village each.
He said biggest challenge was to enhance quality food production on ever decreasing farm land so the farmers would be able to utilize services from all agencies and sources.
The university had developed twenty improved farm tools and these were being made available by the state department of agriculture. The university was making available nearly 600 quintal breeder seed to the agriculture department for further multiplication at its farms.
