Rishi Jalota justified his billing as the top seed by lifting the boys’ U-12 title in the AITA Talent Series Under12 tennis tournament held at CLTA Complex, Sector 10, on Monday.

In a pulsating final, Rishi snuffed the challenge of second seed Sidharth Goel to emerge as the champion.

It was Sidharth who started off well and claimed the first set 6-4 to gain the upper hand in the match. However, Rishi bounced back and both the players were tied at 4-4 in the second set.

Rishi pressed on the accelerator and won the next two games to win the set 6-4.

Buoyed by the win, Rishi continued to flourish and soon took a 3-1 lead in the final set. Thereafter, Sidharth managed to win just one more game as Rishi easily won the final set 6-2 and won the final match that lasted almost three hours.

The girls’ U-12 title was bagged by third seed Inayat Sandhu after she defeated unseeded Jyotsna Yadav. Inayat made a winning start and easily won the first set 6-3. In the second set, she conceded just two games and won 6-2 to clinch the title.

Meanwhile, in the U-16 Talent Series tennis tournament, top seed Sagar Sehrawat, a CLTA trainee, overcame a spirited challenge from another CLTA trainee Shivam Vij.

Sagar was made to sweat for every point as Shivam pushed him to the brink. However, Sagar managed to win the first set after winning 7-6(3) in the tiebreaker.

Sagar played some stunning shots in the second set and conceded just a single game. He won 6-1.

Shashikant Rajput, Bhupender Dahiya, Naresh Badgujar and Krishan Hooda, all trainees of Chandigarh Academy for Rural Tennis (CHART), moved to the pre-quarterfinals in lop-sided contests.

Qualifier Shrenik Bhalla, a CLTA trainee, outplayed Savinay Singh 6-0, 6-1 while second seed Vatsal Chauhan, also of CLTA, made it to the pre-quarterfinals with an easy win over Rahul Rana.

In the girls’ U-16 category, fifth seed Priyanka Jakhar, a CHART trainee, was shown the exit door by Komal Jeet Kaur. Komaljit came up with a dominant performance and beat Priyanka 7-5, 6-1.

Seventh seed Princy Panchal lost just games in her facile 6-2, 6-0 winover Sohani Makkar.

Third seed Tanya Batra, sixth seed Nandini Singh, fourth seed Adity Dogra, Yamini Issar, Tushita Singh, Dikshita Rana and Luvya Lamba, all CLTA trainees, moved to pre-quarters with easy wins.
