All undergraduates to study law

Panjab University

Come new academic session and all students at the graduate level will have to study law as one of their subjects, no matter what stream have they opted for.

The decision of Panjab University to make all its affiliated colleges add law as one of the subjects in all graduate courses came after the directions of the Punjab and Haryana high court.

This decision of adding law as one of the subjects was communicated to all colleges by the university authorities in the principals' conference held on Friday.
The principals of different colleges, however, are not too happy with the move. They say it will be an additional burden on students. The students too share a similar feeling.

Talking to Hindustan Times, a senior faculty member from one of the colleges in Punjab says, "There is already too much burden on the students and addition of this new subject will further add to the burden. We have already been saying that December exams should not be held in colleges as the number of working days are reduced. With limited number of working days how are we going to teach this subject."

Another faculty member says, "In rural colleges we have students coming from all educational backgrounds and not everyone will be able to understand law. If subjects are to be forced upon students then why give them option in the first place to choose their stream."
Meanwhile, the students too are not too happy with the development. They say it should be made optional.

Namita, a student of DAV College, says, "Law subject should be made optional and students should be allowed to decide whether they want to study it or not."
This development was communicated by Dean Colleges Prof Naval Kishore to college principals who were attending the principals' meet held recently on the PU campus.

A written communication in this regard will also be send to the colleges. The subject will be introduced from the next academic session in all affiliated colleges of the PU.
