Police claim to have recovered body of jeweller Rajnish Verma, 34, who went missing on Wednesday, from fields near Lalru in Punjab on Thursday.

Giving this information on Friday, deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Surinder Pal Singh said two persons have been arrested in the case.

He added that the deceased had gone to Lalru from Baldev Nagar to deliver a consignment on Tuesday and did not return. "His brother Manish lodged a missing complaint at Baldev Nagar police station on Wednesday, following which a case under section 365 (kidnapping) was registered," said the DCP.

The DCP said a team was constituted to nab the miscreants, adding that acting swiftly they nabbed accused Jaswinder Singh, a resident of Ballopur village in SAS Nagar and Sachin of Lalru on Thursday.

He said the body was recovered by digging the fields after Jaswinder's confession. He had divulged that he along with Bahadur Singh and Sachin had allegedly killed him for money.

The DCP said under a conspiracy, the accused had invited the victim to his shop in Lalru and served him drinks laced with sedatives. They strangulated him to death and took away gold ornaments and his two-wheeler.

Sources said the post-mortem was conducted at Dera Bassi hospital and the accused were produced in the court on Friday. They were sent to five-day police custody.
