In a major breakthrough, the local police claimed to have arrested Sarabjit Singh Raju, prime accused in the Amritsar cable operator’s suicide case and incharge of the local Fastway office.

Two co-accused, Akali leader leader Prithpal Singh Lalli and Gurwinder Singh Babbi, had been arrested on Thursday.

Alleging harassment at the hands of the cable mafia, local cable operator Jaswinder Singh Jassi had attempted suicide on March 28. He had died in a hospital on March 30.

Confirming Raju’s arrest, additional deputy commissioner of police (ADCP, special) Harjit Singh Brar, said, “On a tip-off, Raju was arrested from the railway crossing on the Tarn Taran road when he was heading towards the city. He will be produced in the court on Saturday and we will seek his police custody.”

Meanwhile, Lalli and Babbi have been remanded in police custody for two days.

Jassi had named Raju and Lalli in his suicide note, while his widow Balbir Kaur had named Babbi in a complaint to the police.

When asked about the role, if any, of Fastway Company managing director (MD) Gurdeep Singh in the suicide case, Brar said, “Our aim was to first arrest the three local persons. We will see if this suicide has any link with the Fastway MD or not. Although a case has been registered, a detailed investigation is needed before acting against someone. The special investigation team (SIT) will ensure that no innocent person faces action.”

The SIT led by deputy commissioner of police (DCP) Harjinder Singh had met Jassi’s family on Thursday evening.

Expose people who instigated Jassi: Raju

In police custody, Raju told the media, “At my level, I do not deal with cable operators. Jassi was a good person and I want that a detailed probe is conducted to find out the reason behind this suicide. All the people who instigated Jassi at that time (when he took the extreme step) must be exposed. Jassi’s call details also need to be monitored closely.”
