And then some good news for Punjab, Haryana

There is finally some good news for the drought-hit states of Punjab and Haryana. Following heavy rain in Himachal Pradesh, water level in Bhakra and Pong reservoirs, which supply water to the two agrarian states for drinking and irrigation purposes, has risen sharply in the past fortnight.

The increase has been by 20 feet in both the reservoirs. "Water level in Bhakra and Pong dams is now rising because of rain and snow melting," a Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) official said. The rise in water level in Bhakra and Pong dams would bring much-needed relief to the partnering states as the BBMB had recently cut water outflow to them by 10%, citing "alarmingly" low level of water in the reservoirs.

The partner states had even expressed concern over reduced water supply as it could have had adverse implications on the sowing of kharif crops.

Water level in Bhakra on Thursday stood at 1,576.80 feet; it was 1,555.65 feet on July 21.Similarly, water level in the Pong dam has increased from 1,288.76 feet on July 21 to 1,307.74 feet. The current water level, however, is still lower when compared that in the corresponding period last year.
