Angered by woman's death, mob pelts stones at vehicles, police in Amritsar

Tension prevailed in Amritsar city's Jahajgarh area early Wednesday evening after a mob, angered by the death of woman crushed under a recovery van, turned violent and pelted stones at police and private vehicles on the GT road here.

Tension prevailed in Amritsar city's Jahajgarh area early Wednesday evening after a mob, angered by the death of woman crushed under a recovery van, turned violent and pelted stones at police and private vehicles on the GT road here.


The rampage lasted for 15 minutes and the police had to resort to a mild lathicharge to disperse the angered crowd. The deceased has been identified as Challiya Devi (40). Before venting its ire at the vehicles, the mob first blocked traffic on the GT road and kept the woman's body in the middle.

During the ensuing violence, the mob also got into a scuffle with the policemen sent in to control to the situation. Things were brought under control after additional force was rushed to the spot.

Ranju, a relative of the deceased said: "Challiya Devi had moved out of the house to buy medicine and suddenly a recovery van firstly hit her and then crushed her by running over." The deceased's and locals family have demanded immediate action against the driver of the recovery van. A deputy commissioner of police (crime) HS Brar, who also reached the spot, said: "A case has been registered against the accused driver and further investigations are on."

On a question regarding violence, the police officer said: "We have brought things under control and our men have been deployed in the area to keep an eye."
