State animal husbandry department has decided to collect the data of the families involved in the Backyard Poultry project.
In a seminar organised to frame strategic plan for poultry development activity in the state, additional chief secretary of the department Deepak Sanan, on Saturday, asked its officials to collect the database of the families involved in the poultry farming under Backyard Poultry project.
The department has decided to go ahead with the vigorous implementation of Backyard poultry project. The department opined that backyard poultry farming was the easiest way of poultry farming.
In the seminar, several issued were discussed, including status of poultry in the state, economics of commercial broilers and layers farming in the state, backyard poultry production in the hill region with special reference to diversified poultry and strategies to improve poultry sector in the state.
Experts also suggested that instead of commercial poultry, backyard poultry with strains should be encouraged in the state and efforts should be made to produce local resource based low cost poultry feed.
Meanwhile, animal husbandry director KS Pathania said poultry population has increased by 37% in the last five years, from nearly 8 lakh to 11 lakh.
“For increase in the poultry population, backyard poultry project is a major cause,” said Pathania.
