Taking a cue from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Abhiyan, several Congress office-bearers on Thursday demanded the removal of Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC) president Partap Singh Bajwa so as to launch the ‘Swachh Congress Abhiyan’.
About two dozen office-bearers of the party from Ludhiana on Thursday wrote another letter to party president Sonia Gandhi, protesting against the removal and expulsion of former district party unit president Pawan Dewan and four block Congress presidents.
They alleged that Bajwa had ‘polluted’ the Congress in Punjab to the extent that loyal and hardworking Congressmen were finding it difficult to work in the party. They said the party must realise and understand at the earliest that the sooner Bajwa was removed the better it would be for the party in Punjab.
Those who signed the letter to Gandhi included former PPCC secretary Ahmed Ali Guddu, Ashwani Garg, Yogesh Magho, Rinku Malhotra, Manmohan Vohra, Jagtar Singh Matharoo, Davinder Singh Kehal, Amit Madan, Baljit Singh Ahuja and Rajan Kapoor, among others.
Meanwhile, the entire doctors’ cell of the district Congress committee, Ludhiana, has quit in protest against Dewan’s removal (as DCC chief) and expulsion. The doctors said this was an arbitrary decision and the party high command must revoke it.
Cell president Dr Banarasi Dass Malhotra, Dr Sher Singh Malhotra, Dr Kapil Khanna, Dr Rajesh Kumar, Dr Sita Ram and Dr Surinder Vohra, in a joint statement, said they were resigning to register their protest against the expulsion of Dewan and others from the party.
