The Special Task Force (STF) of the Uttar Pradesh police, in a joint operation with Kangra police, arrested an army jawan on suspicion of espionage from Andreta village of Kangra district on Friday.

The accused, identified as Sunit Kumar, 20, passed sensitive inputs about the army through social networking site Facebook in collusion with a women allegedly working for Pakistan's Inter- Services Intelligence (ISI).
The police raided the accused's house at Andreta on early Friday morning and arrested him. He had come to his native village on vacation, three days ago.

The action came close on the heels of arrest of an ISI agent, Asif Ali, in Meerut in Uttar Pradesh last week. The accused solider, who was recruited in the army two years ago was posted at supply corps of the army at Meerut.

The STF seized a laptop, mobile and some documents found in his possession. The accused has been taken to Meerut on a transit remand.

Sources said that Sunit allegedly walked into a 'honey trap' set up by the ISI on Facebook.
The ISI woman agent lured him with the offer of a laptop in lieu of providing her the information about the army.

In the initial interrogation, the accused has admitted to passing some information to the woman on Facebook.
“The accused, however, claimed innocence saying he got trapped unknowingly as he was not aware that the woman was an ISI agent, ” said sources adding that the STF has taken him to Meerut to find out what kind of information he shared with the ISI agent.

Meanwhile, top police high officials in Kangra evaded queries regarding the arrest of the qrmy jawan. “The only information we have is that the soldier was wanted in some case registered at Meerut,” said a police spokesperson.

“The Himachal police in a joint operation with Meerut police detained the accused from his house on Friday morning,” he added.

However, Andretta residents claimed that Sunit, son of a retired army man, could not have indulged in such activities and alleged that it was a conspiracy to implicate him.
