The governing body of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) approved selection and promotion of a large number of doctors on Wednesday.

The meeting of the governing body, which was held under the chairmanship of union health minister Dr Harsh Vardhan, took place after over a year.

According to sources, the governing body accepted the proceedings of the Standing Selection Committee of the institute, which had already selected and promoted several doctors.

As per the procedure, the standing selection committee first makes selections for various posts in the faculty at the PGIMER; it comprises experts mainly from outside the institute.

Later, the governing body gives its approval to the selection made by the committee.

There were around 150 doctors working at different levels in the PGIMER faculty positions, who are waiting for their promotions for around seven months.

The PGIMER faculty association had for long been demanding that the governing body meet immediately, and had even held protests.

Psychiatry dept head is PGIMER's dean

Among other decisions, Dr Savita Malhotra, head, department of psychiatry, was selected as dean of the institute. She will take charge from the present dean, Dr Amod Gupta, once the order is issued after minutes of the governing body are signed. Dr S Varma, head, medicine department, was selected as sub-dean of the institute.
