Congress MLA from Dhuri, Arvind Khanna, who had announced his resignation about a fortnight ago, on Saturday said he would take a final call on the issue after meeting former Punjab chief minister Capt Amarinder Singh on Thursday.
Khanna on May 13 had said on his Facebook page that he had sent his resignation to the assembly speaker.
According to the blog Khanna had posted on his Facebook page, he was disenchanted with his political life after being unable to get any major developmental work done in his segment for the last many years since his party has been in the opposition.
Khanna said he also wanted to devote time to his business. Khanna told HT that he would take the final call on his resignation after meeting Amarinder.
“I will have a detailed talk with Capt Amarinder and then decide the next course of action,” Khanna, a close aide of Amarinder, said.
Khanna, however, failed to appear before the speaker, which is mandatory for resignation to be accepted. This has also given rise to speculations that Khanna may want to reconsider his decision.
Though in the same blog, Khanna had said he would not be joining the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) as was expected by many, sources said the Akalis were also not keen on having him on their side after AAP candidate Bhagwant Mann’s impressive victory margin from Dhuri in Sangrur LS segment.
The Congress is trying hard to urge Khanna not to resign as it would invite a bypoll from Dhuri from where the Congress candidate failed to get adequate votes in the parliamentary polls.
Khanna, a three-time MLA, in 2012 had got 51,536 votes to win the Dhuri seat. In the Lok Sabha election, AAP’s Mann got 63,189 votes, SAD’s SS Dhindsa got 29,352 while Congress’s Vijay Inder Singla got 17,398 from Dhuri.
“I am not sure if I have said this before, but one of the reasons why I have made up my mind to step aside is because of factors that I cannot control. If I can’t be judged by my work, why should I waste my time,” Khanna wrote.
