Accused mastermind in the 2007 Samjhauta Express blast case, Swami Assemanand has approached the Punjab and Haryana high court seeking bail and stay on the further proceedings of the Panchkula special National Investigation Agency (NIA) court proceedings in the matter.

The petition filed by Aseemanand, who is in the Ambala central jail, on Tuesday came up for hearing before the division bench headed by justice SS Saron. The court referred the case to the appropriate bench as per roster.

On February 18, 2007, two improvised explosive devices (IEDs) had exploded on the Lahore-bound cross-border train near Dewana railway station in Panipat district of Haryana, killing 68 people and injuring 12. Most of the victims were Pakistani.

The petitioner submitted through his counsel that he was in custody for the past more than three years. On November 30 last year, the Panchkula trial court had dismissed his bail application.
