The ONGC 13th Asian Billiards and 15th under-21 Asian Snooker Championship will be held from June 7 to 13 at the UT Guest House, Sector 6, Chandigarh.
The tournament is being organised by the Punjab Billiards and Snooker Association (PBSA) under the aegis of the Asian Confederation of Billiard Sports (ACBS) and Billiards and Snooker Federation of India (BSFI).
The championship was originally scheduled to be held in April, but had to be postponed due to Lok Sabha elections.
“Internationally renowned cue sports players from 14 countries will be participating in this championship and the people of the region will be able to witness world-class talent in action,” PBSA president DS Bains said.
He added that the participating countries include India, Pakistan, Malaysia, Thailand, Singapore, Hong Kong, UAE, Qatar, Syria, Korea, Japan, Sri Lanka, Myanmar and Iran.
“The current World Billiards Champion Peter Gilchrist and the current World under-21 Snooker Champion Hussain are also participating in this championship. International Billiards and Snooker Champion and current World No 2 Alok Kumar of Punjab, who is also general secretary of PBSA, will lead the local challenge,” Bains added.
For the ONGC Asian Snooker Under-21 Championship the first round, round robin and the last 16 round would be the best of seven frames, while the quarterfinals and semifinals would be best of nine frames.
“The final will be best of 11 frames played in one session with a 30 minute break. The championship will be played on specially imported tables. International referees, along with Indian referees, will be adjudging the games,” Alok said.
Alok further stated that all players will be seeded and the seeding will be done by the ACBS seeding committee, who will take into consideration previous Asian snooker championship records for seeding criteria.
The seeding will also include other performance records achieved at other multi-sport events and at the IBSF world snooker championship and the WSA professional circuits.
