The Punjab State Commission for Scheduled Castes, on Wednesday, initiated action on a complaint against Congress MLAs for allegedly assaulting head constable Jai Pal and insulting him with casteist remarks on March 13, after the Dalit cop and his commandant appeared before the commission to record their statements.

Commission chairman Rajesh Bagha and member Parkash Singh Gardhiwala said Jai Pal had narrated the entire sequence of events leading to his assault and the "deliberate attempt" on part of the MLAs to "denigrate" him before the media.

Bagha said Jai Pal told them that he was on duty in the Vidhan Sabha premises on March 13 when the police were told that a girl had entered the Vidhan Sabha in an unauthorised manner. He said that when he went to the Congress Legislature Party office to look into the matter, some MLAs standing outside the office came charging towards him and started manhandling him in full public view.

Jai Pal alleged that Congress MLAs Rana Gurjit Singh, Kuljit Singh Nagra, Sukhjinder Singh, Jagmohan Singh Kang and Parminder Singh Pinky were chasing the policemen discharging their duties in the lounge of the Vidhan Sabha.

"They managed to catch hold of me and started thrashing me. They also asked me about my caste. When I told them that I belong to a poor scheduled caste family, they snatched my identity card and used casteist remarks against me," Jai Pal told the commission, pleading for strict action against the MLAs.
