At CWG, every third Indian medallist from Haryana

Almost one-fourth of India’s 215-member contingent at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games hails from Haryana. On the medal front, the state’s share is even higher: one-third of the country’s tally. Of India’s 52 medals as on July 31 (47 already won and five assured by boxers after making it to the semifinals), 16 have been bagged by Haryana’s players.

Wrestlers from the state have contributed nine medals: four gold - Amit Kumar (57kg), Yogeshwar Dutt (65kg), Babita (55kg) and Vinesh Phogat (48kg) - and five silver - Satywart Kadian (97kg), Bajrang (61kg), Lalita (53kg), Sakshi Malik (58kg) and Geetika (63kg).

In shooting, Sanjeev Rajput (50m rifle), Anisa Sayyed (25m pistol), Gurpal Singh (50m pistol) and Harpreet Singh (25m rapid fire pistol) clinched silver medals.

Three medals were assured by boxers Vijender Singh (75kg), Mandeep Jangra (69kg) and Pinki Rani (51kg) by winning their quarterfinal bouts on Wednesday and making it to the medal round. On Friday, they have their semifinal bouts and will get a bronze each even if they lose.
