As many as 650 athletes are participating in the 3-day tourney.
Inaugurating the meet, vice-chancellor Jaspal Singh said the large number of participants highlighted the university's sports culture.
He also lauded the university's players and the coaches for winning the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad trophy.
Raj Kumar Sharma, university's sports director, promised to continue working towards the trophy this year too.
In the events of the first day, Harish Ram of National College of Physical Education, Chupki, came first in the 5000 metre race. Mukesh Kumar of the same college and Ajay Kumar of Akal Degree College, Mastauna Sahib in Sangrur, finished second and third, respectively.
In the women's category, Ritu Dinakar and Manju Yadav of Malwa College of Physical Education College, Bathinda, secured the first and second spots respectively. Prabhjit Kaur from Public College, Samana, stood third.
